Hwang Gyu Tae

Hwang Gyu Tae presents Melting Sun, Big Bang Theory, and Pixel series that contemplate on the essence of light and energy, the relationship between humans and nature, and the pressing issues of our time. Employing radical techniques such as film burning, appropriation, compositing, montage, and multiple exposures, he creates distorted and melting suns in the Melting Sun series while his Pixel series features a new sun composed of red lines and planes. For the Korean people, the sun has been recognized from ancient times to the present as a powerful source of light and life as well as a symbol of change and regeneration. In Hwang’s works the sun is the visual image of the dynamic energy within individuals and the community toward conflict, eruption, and transformation. The works let viewers experience a primordial energy that burns fiercely and disruptively like the sun in Koreans, who are seemingly calm and restrained. They also make viewers depart from the usual pursuit of restraint and balance and awaken their hidden vitality and desire for transformation.
