David Krippendorff

David Krippendorff presents the video work Sleepwalking, which symbolizes the crisis of nature and civilization through two allotropes of carbon: coal and diamonds. In the video, diamonds slowly fall from the top of the screen and pile up on the floor, eventually covering the dark background. This scene is interpreted as a metaphor for how our material desires gradually overwhelm us, and it also visually presents the viewer a sensation of being buried. Throughout the work, there is a prevailing sense of loss, expressed through the diamonds breaking into fragments. While coal is not shown on the screen, its absence itself symbolizes the root cause of the climate change crisis. His work, which explores how images reconstruct reality, suggests that art has the power to provoke human emotions and drive social change.
