Ralph Tepel
Ralph Tepel presents the Mitsuko series, which visualizes meanings and symbols of words. This work begins with a single calligraphic character by Mitsuko Radeloff and unfolds by expressing and combining the abstract imagery that the character’s inherent meaning conveys. Reinterpreting traditional Japanese calligraphy and cultural motifs through the language of contemporary art, Tepel expands Asian philosophical thought into the realm of visual art. Particularly, the core concept of Japanese spiritual culture, do (“the way”), is revealed not merely as a path but as the fundamental principle of the universe and human life, embodying an inner journey of reflection and growth. It encompasses the aesthetic harmony arising from the interplay of nature, humanity, and all living beings. The artist explores hidden symbols beyond the surface meaning of the characters, translating them into images and juxtaposing texts and images to create scenes where these two distinct elements find balance. Through this, Tepel opens a dialogic space of art where East and West, tradition and modernity intersect.
