Woo Chang Won

Woo Chang Won presents the Inner Monolog series, meditative photos of plaster masks that pose fundamental questions about existence. By creating plaster casts of people with their eyes closed and photographing the masks, he reveals the weight of life etched into wrinkles around eyes and mouth, sagging cheeks, and the relaxed expression—seemingly serene on the surface yet profoundly resonant. These faces evoke the passage of time and the burdens borne through life, creating a silent reverence for stillness before the viewer. Within the weightless space formed between the masks and the observers, an internal dialogue unfolds, gradually dissolving the “external world” and initiating a profound conversation with their inner selves. Woo’s journey toward the essence begins with “they,” passes through “I,” and expands toward “we.” By turning the gaze inward rather than outward, this progression uncovers the profound value and meaning of existence, culminating in a shared experience of consolation and mutual solace.
