2025 BIPF Special Exhibition "Homeland"
A retrospective exhibition of Jung Jung-Hae, a leading figure of the post-realism era in Busan photography.
The 2025 Busan International Photo Festival (BIPF) is proud to present a special exhibition titled "Homeland"
(meaning Hometown), featuring the esteemed veteran photographer Jung Jung-Hae,
a leading figure in Busan realism photography. The exhibition will be held at Space Wonji
from September 24 to October 23, 2025.
Photographer Jung Jung-Hae began his photographic journey in 1969 as an amateur and officially
entered the world of realism photography in 1971 by joining 'Cheongsahae',
a renowned collective that included celebrated figures such as Choi Min-Shik and Kim Bok-Man.
His career gained significant recognition in 1973 when he received an Honorable Mention in the
Dong-A Photography Contest, establishing himself as a key photographer
of the late realism era in Busan.
For over 50 years, Jung has been active in Busan, documenting the city's
folk arts and capturing the everyday life and landscapes of the Busan region
from the 1960s through the 2000s. His work has played a vital role in preserving the
region’s artistic heritage and advancing Busan's cultural and artistic development.
In 2023, he was selected as the first photographer from the Busan region to be archived by
the National Asian Culture Center, marking his work as an invaluable resource for understanding
the socio-cultural changes of a specific era beyond photography itself.
We sincerely invite your interest and attendance at the 2025 BIPF Special Exhibition
"Homeland", featuring one of Busan’s most respected veteran photographers,
Jung Jung-Hae.
Artist’s Statement
The years gone by were never easy. Even in rural villages and wealthy households, every home had a rice chest to store grains.
When the harvest failed and the chest ran dry, we would borrow rice from our neighbors to fill our stomachs.
We led oxen and goats to the fields and mountains to graze.
In the heat of summer, we would strip off our clothes and cool off in rivers or the sea.
With little in the way of proper playgrounds, that was how we spent our childhood.
eyond the gate, our fathers labored tirelessly in the fields to feed and protect us.
Now, it is our responsibility to live well—
to show, through our own lives, the legacy they entrusted to us.
